Worbla Mask Making & Performing Workshop

During pulzArt 8 you can make your own mask from Worbla with Russell Dean, artistic director of Strangeface Theatre Company.
Worbla is a non-toxic thermoplastic made from renewable natural raw materials and is a favourite material for costume design, crafting and theatre. It can be heat shaped with a heat gun and is safe to use without special tools.
The course is aimed at professionals working in the fields of performing arts (actors, puppeteers, dancers, physical theatre performers, sculptors, puppet makers, prop makers, teachers etc.) to enable participants to make a strong effective mask without specialist equipment.
Participants will learn:
- What makes a ‘good mask’
- How to sculpt in clay
- Tips and tricks on how to use Worbla
- Effective paint techniques
On the final day they will explore the potential of their masks in performance.
Time of the workshop:
13th & 14th October 11:00-17:00 Mask making. Location TBA.
16th October 11:00-17:00 Mask performing. Cimborák Puppet Studio
After the performing workshop the participants will have a short presentation open for the public.
Maximum number of participants accepted: 12
Age limit is 14+
The workshop is in english. Basic understanding of english language is essential.
To bring: working clothes for mask making days and comfortable, unbranded clothes for performing day.
Participation fee is 200 RON which includes all three days of the workshop and of course, you get to keep the mask you make. Attending only the performing workshop is not possible.
After applying, you will receive an invoice via e-mail to pay the fee, after which you will have 3 days to make the payment in order for your application to be accepted. (In case you need invoice for a legal entity, please provide the entity’s full name, address and CIF nr. in the application form!)

Russell studied at Aberystwyth University where he gained a first class degree in Drama. He worked as a freelance designer/maker and facilitator for Trestle Theatre Company, Welsh National Opera, Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah amongst many others.
Russell has been a writer, director, designer/maker, performer, project manager and facilitator on 9 productions and hundreds of workshops for Strangeface since 2001.
During this time he has also developed a reputation for being one of the UK’s leading mask makers. He designs and makes commissions and box sets of masks for schools, groups and other artists such as Vamos, Bootworks and Mick Barnfather.
