Version 10 of pulzArt starts in 10 days
From 11 to 13 October, the pulzArt contemporary art festival will be held for the tenth time in Sfântu Gheorghe. With a new theme every year, this year’s event will explore the intersection of timeless, low-tech solutions and the 21st-century high-tech world through theatre, literature, music and community experiences. This year’s edition features performances and creations by artists from Spain, France, Poland, Hungary and from right here in Romania.
The organisers are recruiting young volunteers once again this year to help run the festival’s programmes. Those interested can apply until 6 October through this link.
Let’s see what to expect at pulzArt 10!
Music
When it comes to music, chances are there’s something to appeal to every ear.
For example, Klawo, considered one of the most promising new bands on the Polish music scene, will perform an electronica-infused jazz concert on 12 October at 21:00 at the Háromszék Dance Studio. The Franco-Belgian Alizarina will arrive with his clarinet and turntables a little later, at 23:00. His live instrumental performance will touch on a variety of genres from techno to classical.
On the Phonexoscope meditative soundscape journey, festival attendees can listen to the heartbeat of the city, its natural noises and murmurs. The sound installation in Elisabeth Park ( in case of bad weather, on the stone stage) can be joined every 15 minutes on Saturday from 15:00 to 17:00 and on Sunday from 12:00 to 15:00. The frequencies mixed in real time will be played through headphones.
Vinyl lovers can pick up the latest additions to their collections at the Vinyl Fair and have a good time dancing to küb_beat and tengrila‘s vinyl party titled eXistenZ – a tribute to David Cronenberg on Friday 11 October from 22:00. Saturday evening’s pulzParty will feature Infragandhi from Budapest, while local artists will be represented by Magor Bocsárdi with his solo live act and the electro-acoustic ensemble Prezeng.
This year, the Vinyl Fair and late-night music events will take place at Bábel Kiskultúr (str. Ciucului, nr. 21).
Theatre
On 12 October at 19:30, the Barcelona-based performing and visual arts company Insectotròpics will present Orpheus, a performance that combines theatre, video, music and visual art into an innovative multidisciplinary experience.
Teatrum, made up of local actors Boróka Göllner, Dezső Derzsi, Bence Kónya Ütő, and Tibor Pálffy, will present a theatrical experiment entitled P!Ng! to the pulzAudience on 12 October at 17:00. We can’t give too much away, but you’ll surely be entertAIned.
Literature
The literary guest of the 10th edition is Romanian poet Dan Sociu, who will give a musical poetry performance with performer Victor Nicolae Ciobanu on 11 October at 19:30 at Bábel Kiskultúr. The performance entitled Intermediate Light explores the relationship and the boundaries between sound and poetry, music and poem, in a drifting interplay of contemporary poems and Middle Eastern instruments.
Workshops
The medencebag bag-making workshop, which was a huge hit with creative types five years ago, returns to pulzArt! Participants will choose the material for the bag from used advertising molinos, then the matching accessories (strap, zipper, rope) and leave with a finished bag with the help of the medencebag staff. The workshop, which will take place on Friday and Saturday as well, requires registration through the link here.
The other workshop to be held on Friday, entitled Own Iceberg, will give participants insights into some of the reproduction techniques used by the artist duo Ferenc Gróf and Zsófia Gyenes. Participants will use stamps and printing blocks to create textile and paper-based graphic works and will have the opportunity to print white T-shirts and tote bags – both items can be brought from home or purchased on-site.
Exhibition
Opening on 11 October, Encode, decode is a sound exhibition where visitors can experience the work of visual artist Levente Albert in a very special way: by listening to it. The mapping of visual works of art into sound opens up new dimensions of the art experience and enriches the experience of reception.
