János Sugár (HU): Time Patrol
What do passers-by think of? What thoughts occupy the mind of an ordinary person, who has something to say for ten minutes without interruption? János Sugár’s bold community public space project gives voice to people whose voices are rarely heard.
“If you can dictate from memory uninterruptedly for at least 10 minutes, we will pay you 4000 forints” – this was the invitation on the side of the camper van stationed in Moszkva Square in spring 2003. Recorded transcripts of the dictations were available for purchase as a newspaper. A total of 77 texts were written in the square at the time and were published in 2021 in a volume on the occasion of János Sugár’s solo exhibition “Luxury Vector”, which took place in 2022 in the MAGMA Contemporary Art Space. The volume of texts has become a genuine documentary archive, containing mostly personal stories.
János Sugár’s project “Time Patrol” will arrive in Sfântu Gheorghe on 9 October, before the 8th pulzArt, where he will collect texts in five locations. The conditions are similar to the original call, with a certain amount of money offered to anyone who can dictate uninterruptedly for ten minutes. Recorded transcripts of selected stories will be available for purchase in the form of a newspaper from 14 October 2022 at the MAGMA Contemporary Art Space (Libertății Square, 2) and at the venues of the 8th pulzArt Contemporary Arts Festival. The launch of the book, published in 2021, and the newspaper will take place at MAGMA on Saturday 15 October at 16:00, where János Sugár will be accompanied by Tamás Bezsenyi for a discussion.
